苏木素又称苏木精，是细胞核和染色质的染色剂。也是酸碱指示剂，pH5.0(黄)～pH6.0(紫)，0.0(粉红)～1.0(绿)。定性检定铜(II)、铁(III)、钼酸盐、铋(III)和锡(IV)等。光度测定钒、铝、锡(IV)、氟、铌、钽 。

溶解性： 易溶于酒精，微溶于水和甘油，易溶于热水和热乙醇，溶于碱、氨和硼砂的溶液。
